Biographical history

Charlie Chew was born on June 22, 1896 in Kewiping Canton. In 1913, he arrived in Canada to meet his father King Wui Leon. Charlie then worked as Cook in several locations in British Columbia including Vancouver, Kamloops, and Fernie. In 1916, Charlie moved to Alberta. He worked in Fort Macleod for six months, before opening a Café in New Dayton with his father. In 1930, Charlie returned to China and married Lee Chun, but he returned to Canada after the marriage to run the café. After his father's death in 1964, Charlie managed the N.D. Café on his own. In 1986, Lee Chun Leong came to Canada, and Charlie was he was reunited after a separation of 55 years. Chun Leong died in 1989, and Charlie died in 1991.

Custodial history

In 1993, George Webber donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a daybook, menus, a dictionary, and several religious books. The fonds dates from ca. 1932--1940.
