Biographical history

Webster Smith Chase (1870-1938) migrated from Ontario, to the Havilla area of Washington, United States, to a homestead in the Wapiti-Halcourt area of Alberta in 1917. He married Gertie Churchman, who was born circa (ca.) 1891, a daughter of Alice Churchman of Tonasket and Havilla, Washington. Webster and Gertie Chase had fourteen children including Austin (1903-1918), a son from Webster Chase's first marriage, Alice, Cora, Florence, Ruth, Ruby, Edna, Pearl, Earl, Dorothy, Iris, Mary, and Leonard. In ca. 1928 the Chase family moved to Okanagan Falls, British Columbia. Webster Chase died on March 3, 1938, survived by his wife, who died in June 1970.

Custodial history

Mrs. H. Greenslade deposited these records in the Human History Division of the Provincial Museum of Alberta in 1973 and they were subsequently transferred to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Mrs. Greenslade's relationship to the Chase family is unknown.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of photocopied transcripts of correspondence written from the Chase family to their families and a map of the Halcourt, Alberta area.
