Biographical history

The Chilkoot Sourdough Bakery was conceived as a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush. The project was coordinated by the Yukon Outdoors Club (YOC) and organized by Judy Dabbs, Ione Christensen, and Pat McKenna who volunteered their time along with many other YOC members. The Bakery provided sourdough pancakes and coffee to hikers finishing the Chilkoot Trail at Bennett. The pancakes were made from sourdough starter, which was carried over the Chilkoot Trail by Ione Christensen's great-grandfather, Wesley Ballentine, in 1898. The Bakery was very successful and resulted in hikers donating $6,500 which was used to set up the Yukon Outdoors Club Fund.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of 2 albums with original colour photographs taken during the summer of 1998 and includes construction of the bakery and bear fence, volunteers in historic dress cooking and serving food to the hikers, Bennett Church and the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) train station. The photographs were possibly taken by Ione Christensen. Also included are 2 historic photographs of Bennett, B.C. and a historic activity base map, depicting the locations of buildings in Bennett, 1899-1900, used to establish the contemporary site of the bakery. The textual records include the proposal, correspondence with Parks Canada, budget, equipment, donors, staff, and related documents.
