Notice biographique

Soon after the Mounted Police established Calgary in 1875 it was found that some type of protection against fire was needed and a bucket brigade was duly formed. However, the first real organization took place on 1885 August 25 when a hook and ladder company and a bucket corps were created and a chemical engine procured. A series of wells were also dug at several corners to serve as hydrants. Officers were elected but soon resigned on 1885 September 1 when a reorganization took place. Shortly thereafter a major fire burned a considerable portion of the community, the result of which was the purchase of a Ronald engine and two hose reels and 2000 feet of hose. This fire caused considerable dissatisfaction and concern so 1886 November 1, a meeting was held at which new officers were elected and a new fire hall recommended. This was approved by the Town Council, work commencing immediately on a site on 7th Avenue between Centre and 1st Streets SE. In 1887 May it was completed, the citizens of Calgary contributed over $500.00 towards its furnishing. About this time, however, the Town Council became greatly enamoured of their new hall and proceeded to hold their meetings therein as well as conducting general civic business from this location. This did not meet with approval of the Brigade, so the members stepped down, sold the furniture and donated the proceeds to the hospital. The Mayor and Council formed their own brigade but before long, their disastrous performance at fires resulted in a strong demand for the reinstatement of the old force. This occurred in 1889 July.
