History
Ross Patterson Alger was born in Prelate, Saskatchewan in 1920 and moved with his family to Alberta in the 1930s. He was educated at the University of Alberta and received a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1942. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 1939-1945, Alger continued his studies at the University of Toronto, Ontario where he obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration. Alger moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1947 to begin a career in accounting. He was elected as a Public School Trustee in 1958, of which body he later became chairman. He was appointed chairman of the Citizen's Budget Committee in 1971 and in the same year was also elected Alderman for Ward 6. In 1974, Alger ran for Mayor, but was unsuccessful. Alger was elected Mayor in 1977 and served one term. He was defeated in his bid for a second term in the election of 1980.
