Name of creator
Edmonton's commitment to public parks can be traced to the early part of the twentieth century. By 1906 the city had set aside 294 acres of parkland which were administered by the Engineer's Department. In April 1912 the first Parks Department was created, however, in response to the realities of an economic downturn, it was abolished in August 1913. For the next thirty four years the parks were administered once again by the Engineer's Department. Another Parks Department was formed in 1947 and by 1961 it merged with the Recreation Department to become the Parks and Recreation Department. The new department continued to be responsible for the administration of civic parkland and for all facets of leisure and recreation in the city of Edmonton. In 1997, the Parks and Recreation Department was merged with the Community and Family Services Department to become the Community Service Department.
In accordance with the archives mandate, which requires that records generated by the corporation of the City of Edmonton be deposited at this facility, this fonds was transferred to the City of Edmonton Archives in numerous accessions between 1973 and 2001.
