The CKUA Radio Network, Canada's first educational and public broadcaster, formed in 1927 on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Alberta. While the station began as a low wattage station with a staff of amateur radio enthusiasts, the station grew to become a radio and internet broadcast network. Initially, the Government of Alberta funded the station, but CKUA became a private broadcasting station in 1994. A foundation comprised of foundation members now governs the station. Corporate sponsors, foundation memberships, and listener donations financially support the station. Over 160,000 weekly listeners tune into CKUA.
