Biographical history

Clarence John Elder, 1898- , was born in Athelstane, Quebec. He fought in First World War with the 9th Battalion Canadian Engineers. On his return he worked as a salesman for Canadian General Electric until 1926 when he began a long career with Bruce Robinson Electric Ltd., rising to the position of manager. He retired in 1958. Bruce Robinson Electric was the Alberta agent for Delco-Light electric plants, which were widely used in rural Alberta before wide-spread rural electrification took place. He married Grace Maureen Culley in 1928 and they had two daughters. During the Second World War he served in Canada with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of First World War letters home (1918-1919); reminiscences of First World War experiences and colleagues; military certificates and paybooks; Canadian Corps Association in Alberta membership and handbook (1936); Delco-Light sales book (1917-1921) and list of users (1916-1946); and photographs of 9th Battalion Canadian Engineers, and Delco-Light plants, salesmen and buildings using this lighting.
