History

Ada Philomene Dowling, 1858-1954, was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The daughter of Major Thomas Dowling, ?-1899, of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), she moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1886. In 1888 she married John Ryan Costigan, 1855-1903, and they had three children, Gerald Albert, 1895-1973, John Francis, 1889- ,and Marie Josephine (Gawthrop), 1893-1965. When her husband, a lawyer, died she became the music instructor at St. Hilda's College and Western Canada College. Later she managed Emerald Lake Chalet for eight years. She retired to Vancouver in the early 1930s.
