Biographical history

William Richard Whittingham was born in London, England on 6 August 1878. He enlisted in the 4th Battalion (Bn.) Durham Light Infantry, a British unit, on 20 August 1892 as a bugler and served with the British Army in the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. He was awarded the Queen's Medal with clasps for "Tygela Heights" and "Relief of Ladysmith" for his service during the campaign. In 1913, William emigrated to Canada with his wife Mary Ann and his son Richard, settling in Manitoba and received his discharge from the British Army on 18 April 1914 after serving for 21 years and 242 days. A musician at the time of his enlistment in the 6th Bn. Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.) on 28 September 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec, William served in France and Belgium with the 10th Bn. for three years. On 5 August 1919, William received his discharge from the C.E.F.. He served in the civil service for eighteen years until his retirement. William Richard Whittingham died in 1960 at the age of 82 years.

Consists of Certificate of Identity; Certificate of Discharge - Durham Light Infantry; letter of reference; letter to Dickie (28 Nov 1916); Canadian Expeditionary Force Discharge Certificate; letter to Mrs. Irene de Graff from George Milne (24 June 1993); correspondence between George Milne and Mr. Ron W. Egan (1992 - 1993); and seven diaries (1913, 1915 - 1918).
