Biographical history
David Neil Allison was born on October 22, 1884, in Greenlock, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada as a child with his family, settling in the Ottawa Valley. He moved to Alberta in 1906, but returned to Almonte, Ontario in 1910 to marry Susanna MacPhail (1882-1964). During travels in Alberta in 1906, Allison also traveled to the Yukon (ca. 1906-1910) and took photographs. Susanna and David lived in Vancouver, BC, for several years before returning to Alberta in 1915. In 1918, they moved to the Peace River country in Alberta and settled on land in the Appleton district. David served as Secretary for the Appleton School District in the 1920's. David and Susanna stayed in the Peace River until David's death on June 23, 1952. Susanna and David had three children: David MacPhail (1912-1973), Ruth Togan (1915-1942), and Hugh Alexander Bennett (1917-1987).

Scope and content
The fonds consists of images taken during David Neil Allison's trip up the Athabasca and Mackenzie Rivers in Alberta dating from 1912-1913. The fonds includes images First Nations Peoples, towns, settlements, missions, industry, and the North West Mounted Police. The fonds also includes correspondence related to the financial activities of the Appleton School District No. 2818, and a farmer's handbook dating from 1913 to 1924.

Arrangement
In 1978, Terry Allison, a member of David Neil Allison's family donated the Appleton School District No. 2818 records, and the farmer's handbook to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Terry Allison had found the material in David Allison's homestead near Beaverlodge in Peace Country. In 1990, Terry Allison donated the photographs to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
