Pauline Gladstone, 1929- , the daughter of Senator James Gladstone and Janie Healy Gladstone, was born on the Blood reserve near Cardston, Alberta. In 1953 she married Hugh A. Dempsey, 1929- , and they had five children, James, Louise, John, Leah and Lois. She has been very active in community, native and women's organizations in Calgary. She was instrumental in organizing the Calumet Indian Club of Calgary, was a founding member of the Calgary Indian Friendship Society (now the Calgary Native Friendship Society), and served for over a decade on the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Indian Events Committee. She has sat on the University of Calgary Senate, and was very active with the Indian Students' University Program (ISUP). She also worked with Mount Royal Junior College's Project Go Ahead for First Nations students. In 1987 she was the first recipient of the Chief David Crowchild Memorial Award, and in 1988 received an Alberta Achievement Award, for her role in creating better understanding between native and non-native peoples.
