Biographical history

Duncan McNab McEachran, 1841-1924, was born in Campbelltown, Argyllshire, Scotland. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, Edinburgh in 1862, and came to Canada the same year. In 1866 he founded the Montreal Veterinary college, which became McGill University's Faculty of Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Science in 1889 or 1890. He was dean and professor there until his retirement in 1903. He was also chief inspector of stock for Canada from 1876 to 1902. He made a trip to southern Alberta in 1881, and in 1883 became general manager of the Walrond Ranche. In 2016 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated McEachran as a National Historic Person. The fonds consists of a typescript of his article, "A Journey over the Plains from Fort Benton to Bow River and Back", which includes descriptions of the country passed through, bull train travel, Fort Macleod, Fort Calgary, the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), native peoples, a sun dance, buffalo hunters, whiskey traders, a prairie fire, and the surrender of Sitting Bull at Fort Buford, Montana. Includes an 1895 photograph of the Faculty of Comparative Medicine at McGill.
