Biographical history
On May 5, 1879 Erastus John Lawrence, ?-1900, his wife, Lydia M, and their children, Susan, Fred and Fenwick, left Montreal for western Canada. E.J. was a member of the Northwest Expedition, jointly sponsored by the Canadian government and the Anglican Church under Bishop William Carpenter Bompas. The expedition travelled by train to Winnipeg, then by oxcarts and boats through Shoal Lake, Manitoba; Fort Ellis, Touchwood Hills, Duck Lake, Fort Carleton and Green Lake, Saskatchewan; and Clearwater River, Fort McMurray, and Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The family arrived in Fort Vermilion on September 10, 1879. E.J. ran the first grist mill and sawmill in the settlement, in connection with the Anglican Mission. These were later sold to his nephew, Sheridan Lawrence.
