Biographical history

Earl Joseph Gillett was born in Owosso, Michigan, on July 13, 1883, and immigrated to Canada in 1908, to homestead in the Whitla area. Earl married CoraBelle (nee Adair), on November 16, 1910, in Medicine Hat and took up residence on the homestead. While there, 3 children were born: Earl Alexander (1911), Ella Grace (1913), and Alberta May (1918). The family left Whitla and moved to Medicine Hat in 1922, where Earl Sr. began working as a fireman for the CPR He retired in 1947. Another child, Ronald Sherman was born in 1931, in Medicine Hat. In 1958, Earl Sr. and CoraBelle left the city to live with their youngest son in Cold Lake. The following year, they left there and moved to Vauxhall to live with their eldest son, Earl Jr. Earl Sr. passed away February 14, 1961.

The fonds consists of: O.S. handwritten legends (3) entitled "Ever to be Remembered-the First Stampede-1870-Which Gave Birth to the Name of the City of Medicine Hat" by Earl Gillett (also commonly referred to as the "Gillett Legend"), one of many "original" accounts which relates the history of the naming of the City of Medicine Hat ([ca. 1948]).
