Biographical history

Adelaide Edna Kells was born 10 Jan 1880 in Artemesia, Ontario (now known as Markdale) to Mariane Glassford and Thomas Kells.
Edna Kells became one of the foremost women's editors in western Canada. She worked in newspapers in Winnipeg before coming to Edmonton, where she worked as the South Side reporter for the Edmonton Journal. In 1915 she was appointed Women's Editor, a position she held until her retirement in 1929.

She moved to Victoria, B.C. after retiring. Edna Kells died on 20 Jun 1947.

Custodial history

Clara Myles was the sister of Edna Kells. It is not certain how Anne Lightfoot acquired the material.

Scope and content

The fonds of materials created or collected by Edna Kells, including fiction and non-fiction manuscripts as well as notes and clippings pertaining to these manuscripts. There are numerous short manuscripts and two book size manuscripts; one a source book of early Alberta history and one entitled "Those Wonderful McDougall Women". Most of the material deals with the pioneer history of Alberta.

Immediate source of acquisition

The main portion of this fonds was purchased by the City of Edmonton Archives and Landmarks Committee from Clara Myles in 1953. Two manuscript articles were donated to the City of Edmonton Archives by Anne G. Lightfoot via the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2008.
