Rodney Pike fonds

The fonds consists of materials created by Rodney Pike between ca. 1980 and 1995. The fonds consists of the biographical record and family history of Frank Pike, father of the donor. A later accrual has an essay about the Westward Ho School, a boys' school started by Mr. W. H. Nightingale ca. 1904. Some of the students listed: Howard Emery, Kenny Kinnaird, Otis Bishopric, Dick Secord, Harry Morris, Alan Harvey, Jack Dinning, George Field, Jim Weaver, Kelly Matthews, Ken Pirie, Munro Williamson, Fred Pardu, Vernon Hayward, Peter Pitcher, and the sons of the Wilkins, Blakey, Christie, Gaetz, Matheson, Jamieson, Field and Silas families. The fonds also includes an essay on old Glenora and Dr. W. D. Ferris and his family. In 1997, Rodney Pike donated material he gathered in 1988 for a Historical Society of Alberta lecture on "The Prairie Contribution to the Canadian Navy." This material includes his own recollections of the Second World War, as well as information he gathered from friends who were also from the west and who served in the RCN.

There are also family documents for Private W.D. McAllister, including a rationing order book (1918), Canadian Discharge note giving permission for leave, note for permission to marry, a printed note from Buckingham Palace giving thanks for service and a letter from Grant MacEwan, Lieutenant-Governer of Alberta (1966).

  • This fonds consists of a Stovel's pocket map of Edmonton (1917), posters for community events
  • clippings, an Old Timers Association menu (1905), and papers on various subjects relating to the Society. The fonds also contains information on the Heritage Program started in the winter of 1972, that brought seniors into schools to share with students their memories of pioneer life and homesteading on the prairies. There are also a number of books which have been placed in the Archives Reference Library and photographs from presentations, and the Heritage Collection, as well as the SRSR collection of images detailing their activities, staff, members and facilities over the years. There is also a VHS tape of the opening of their new facility in 1989.

  • The fonds consists of materials created or collected by Bessie McAvoy of Edmonton and dating from 1922 to 1992. The fonds consists of clippings; a list of the city mayors; a history of the Edmonton school district with documentation from that history's research; a manuscript of Irene Cornwall re: George Hustler and Lotta Dempsey; Miss McAvoy's memoirs and an autobiography, including details of her old neighbourhood - now the downtown core of Edmonton; miscellaneous articles and a copy of "News for Seniors", October 1992; and photocopies and clippings on her life, and her teaching and tennis careers.
  • MS-526.3: This fonds consists of related to the life and career of Bessie McAvoy, including her childhood home, her sister Doris Redman, her tennis career, and her education (including two university papers and a copy of "The Souvenir -- Calgary Normal School, 1925-26". This fonds also includes information on clothing, the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Chase's Marvelous Medicinal Almanac, and the Second World War Homefront.

  • The fonds consists of an article, 'The Big Hotel' by Lillian Maze about the Columbia Stopping House, which was published in the Edmonton Journal (1953) and The Historical Reserve. There is also a souvenir booklet 'Souvenir of the Edmonton Schools - Issued at the Opening of the High School, May 9, 1911' (1911). The Edmonton High School was later known as Victoria School.
