Biographical history
Edwin McKenzie (1916-1986), was born in Cranbrook, B.C. He moved to Medicine Hat as a small child when his father, who was with the CPR, was transferred to the city. He was educated in Medicine Hat and attended Normal School in 1939. He taught in rural schools for two years, and then in 1942, taught at Connaught School in Medicine Hat. In 1947, he was made Vice Principal and then in 1955, became Principal of Montreal Street School. Ed became Elementary Education Co-ordinator in 1965 and later, Deputy Superintendent of Schools from 1965 to his retirement in 1976. Mr. McKenzie married Mable (nee Purdy) (1921-1987), in 1943. They had two children; a son, Kerry and a daughter, Janice. Both Ed and Mabel McKenzie were very active members of St. John's Presbyterian Church; Ed, an active choir member for nearly half a century. Mr. McKenzie became Clerk of Session in 1975, the highest lay office in the congregation. He was also Chairman of their 90th Anniversary Celebrations Committee, an event held successfully in 1973. Ed McKenzie was also active in the community outside of the educational realm. He was a member of the Rotary Club for 29 years, a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and a Past Chairman of the Medicine Hat and District Historical Society.
