Biographical history

Dr. George Gordon (G.G.) Elder was a resident of Medicine Hat since the 1920s. He was born July 26, 1894, to Margaret Lawson Elder and James Elder, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He moved to Souris, Mannitoba and graduated high school there in 1912. Souris would be where he would meet his future wife, Emmeline Idora Zeigler; they were married in Minneapolis in 1925.
George Elder continued his studies, with ear, eye, nose and throat specialty given in 1921, becoming a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1923, and receiving his Specialist Certificate in Ophthalmology in 1945.
Some time in the 1920s, himself and his wife moved and settled in Medicine Hat, purchasing a house at 105 Second Street SW. While in Medicine Hat he was a specialist in otolaryngology and opthamology, and was one of the founders of the Medical Arts Clinic.
Dr. Elder was well known for his work with the armed services, and was a lieutenant-colonel and commanding officer of the South Alberta Regiment prior to WWII. He transferred to the R.C.A.F and served during the war years as a medical officer until his discharge in 1945. He was active in the Royal Canadian Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Shrine Club.
Dr. Elder and his wife had three children; Mary Elder (Mary Robb), Jean Elder, and Donald Elder. Dr. Elder passed away April 9, 1962 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery. Emmeline Elder passed away in Vancouver on January 18, 1982 but was buried beside her late husband and son in Hillside Cemetery. William Hunter Elder, Dr. Elder's younger borther, died 1932 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery.
