Biographical history

Elizabeth Bailey Price, 1886-1944, was born in Winnipeg. She and her family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta when she was an infant, and to Calgary in 1893. She trained as a teacher and taught in Olds, Calgary, and Edmonton. She joined the editorial staff of the Calgary Albertan in 1911, and was women's editor for a number of years. There she met and married sports editor, Joe F. Price. They had two children, Frampton and Jo-Anne. She subsequently wrote for the Calgary Herald and freelanced for Canadian Press. Her biographical and historical articles about pioneers, native peoples, railways, sports and North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) appeared in many Canadian publications. She helped organize the Calgary Women's Institute in 1918, and served as secretary and publicity secretary of Women's Institute of Canada for over twenty years. She was prominent in the Canadian Women's Press Club, both locally and nationally (president of the Calgary branch 1914-1916, 1920-1921). In 1932, she moved to Vancouver where she continued her Women's Institute work. For further information see Catherine C. Cole's article, "Elizabeth Bailey Price : A Brilliant and Unusual Woman" in Legacy, vol. 2, no. 2 (May-July 1997), p. 36-37.
