Biographical history
The Elizabeth Fry Society of Alberta, based in Calgary, was incorporated in 1965 as a non-profit, volunteer organization to provide guidance and assistance to people in conflict with the criminal justice system, especially women. The society worked in close association with the John Howard Society for the first ten years in terms of office space and funding. Named after the nineteenth century prison reformer, Elizabeth Fry, the society advocates prison reform and offers programs including shoplifting intervention; support and counselling for women in prison; assistance to victims and their families, and the accused and their families while cases are in the courts. In 1978 an Edmonton branch was formed, so the Calgary society was changed to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary. Although the society relies heavily on volunteers, it now has staff counsellors. It joined the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies in 1977. For further information see The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary, Opening Doors of Understanding : 25 Years of Community Service, 1966-1991. -- Calgary : The Elizabeth Fry Society, 1991.
