Biographical history

Elly De Jongh was born in Holland and came to Edmonton in 1961. In 1977, she became a founding member of the Society for the Protection of Architectural Resources of Edmonton (SPARE), and continued her connection with the organisation by being a Board member. In 1979, she was elected to the Board of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation. The AHRF appointed her as their representative to the Old Strathcona Foundation, to which she was an elected a member in 1981. Mrs. De Jongh was a member of the Edmonton Historical Board's Heritage Sites Selection Committee--representing the Old Strathcona Foundation--and a founding member of Urban Reform Group of Edmonton (URGE). She has also been on the Social Planning Council of the City. In addition to these boards and planning committees, Mrs. De Jongh was also a member of the editorial board of the Strathcona Plaindealer, and was a frequent contributor to local newspapers. Elly De Jongh's efforts and activism has resulted in greater public awareness, documentation and preservation of Edmonton's architectural past.

This fonds consists of material gathered by Elly De Jongh through her association with the Society for the Protection of Architectural Resources in Edmonton (SPARE) and the Urban Reform Group of Edmonton (URGE). The SPARE material consists of walking tour material, meeting minutes, news clippings, financial reports, and photographs. The URGE material consists of policy directions, newsletters, meeting minutes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
