Biographical history
Elwood A. Butchart was born in Ontario in 1897. In 1904, he and his family traveled to Alberta, and settled in Edmonton. In 1913, Elwood worked as a pageboy for the Alberta legislature. From 1916 -- 1919, he served with the Western University Battalion. He played semi-professional baseball before he enrolled in engineering at the University of Alberta in 1919. In 1920, Elwood worked as a surveyor for the Ingenika Gold Company in northern Alberta. In 1923, he joined Jasper Park Lodge as the first superintendent of Transportation. Elwood left Alberta in the late 1920's for B.C. Elwood died in Vancouver in 1983.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of 7 photographs of Edmonton sports teams such as the Y.M.C.A. Baseball team, the University of Alberta Men's Senior Team, and the All Stars Basketball team. The photographs date from [1919 -- 1925].The fonds also includes a transcript of a Toronto Globe article from 1905 about the Butchart family's train journey west from Ontario, a letter from Elwood Butchart about his career and interests in Alberta, and a photographic postcard of the page boys at the Provincial Legislature in 1913.

Immediate source of acquisition
Elwood Butchart donated the records to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1975 and 1980. In 1993, J.E. Butchart, a family member of Elwood Butchart's, donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
