Administrative history
University College was formed in 1977 after the split of the Faculty of Arts and Science. The College was responsible for registering first-year students intending to pursue General Studies, Humanities, Science, and Social Science programmes. The name changed in 1981 to the Faculty of General Studies. The mandate of the faculty was to develop interdisciplinary courses and programs of undergraduate education, to provide first-year students with academic advice and help plan their programmes and explore opportunities available to them at the university, and to coordinate student records and programme management procedure for General Studies degree students and for those who would transfer to the Faculties of Humanities, Science, or Social Sciences. In 2000, the Faculty of General Studies became the Faculty of Communication and Culture. The new name better describes the faculty's teaching and research activities and gives a clearer understanding of the focus underlying the faculty's degree programs. The Faculty of Communication and Culture has a three-fold mandate of: interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate and graduate levels; research, scholarship and other creative activities which grow out of a extend those interdisciplinary interests; and academic and other services to the wider academic community which also grow out of and embodies the faculty's interdisciplinarity. Deans of the Faculty of Communication and Culture: F. Terentiuk, 1977-1981 (Provost); R.G. Weyant, 1981-1986; M.P. Hanen, 1986-1989; D.D. Jenkins, 1989-1990 (Acting); M.J. McMordie, 1990-1998; B.J. Rasporich, 1998-1999 (Acting); Kathleen D. Scherf, 1999-
