Biographical history
William Fernley "Fern" Cose Gully, 1892-1951, was born in Kingswear, South Devon, England. Upon graduating from public school he worked in a lumber company office from 1905-1912. He then emigrated to Canada and joined the staff of the Calgary Herald in Calgary, Alberta in 1913. He became chief accountant and held this position until his death. Fern was a well-known amateur photographer and was a member of the Calgary Photo Forum. His portraits of natives were widely shown, and he was made a blood brother of the Stoneys in 1942. In 1917 he married Vera Farley, 1895-1996, and they had two daughters, Edna May (Binns), 1919-2002 and Dorothy (Bourne).

Scope and content
The fonds consists of photographs of Banff Indian Days (1938-1948), Blackfoot (Siksika) personalities (1920s-1943) and sun dance near Gleichen (1943), Sarcee (Tsuu T'ina) personalities and reserve (1930s-1941), Stoney personalities and Morley reserve including Stoney Indian Stampede and sun dance (1935-1949), Blood personalities (1930s), Treaty 7 60th anniversary celebration (1937), Calgary Stampede parade and events (1936-1951), Black Diamond Stampede (1944), royal visit (1939), and Fern Gully and family (1940s). Includes recorded interview with Vera Gully about Fern's photography work with native peoples (1973), and copied photographs of natives from the 1880s-1900s.
