Biographical history
Fred Victor Stone was born on January 15, 1905 to Charles Edward Stone and Mary Belle Stone (nee McLeod) at Bullockville, Alberta. He had his early education in the Stone School District Number (No.) 657 near Alix, Alberta and in 1918 he attended Camrose High School in Camrose, Alberta for a year. He then attended Crescent Heights High School in Calgary for two years returning to work on the family farm for a time. In 1925 he attended Calgary Normal School and taught at North Star School District No. 577 the following year. In 1927 he enrolled at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1931, and a Master of Arts degree in 1933, and in the summer of 1934 he was appointed secretary to the premier of Alberta. He served three years in that position under R.G. Reid and William Aberhart. In July 1936 he married Margaret Alix McCaig and together they had two daughters, Sheila and Heather. In 1937 the family moved to Montreal where Stone began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CPR). He retired as president of Canadian Pacific Investments Limited, worked as a part-time chairman for Cominco for a while, and then as director and member of the executive committee of the Montreal Trust Company. During World War II he was loaned by CPR to work in Ottawa for the Canadian government as chief of personnel for the Wartime Prices and Trade Board.
