Edward "Isaie" (Ike) Gagnon was born in St.Nicholas, Levis, Quebec in 1863, the eldest of 14 children born to Isaie Gagnon and Esther Desrochers. Ike moved west in 1891 and in 1894 established a butcher shop in St.Albert and a small boarding house in Athabasca Landing. He married Clementine (Clara) Noel in Sept., 1898. They had three children: Charles, Marie Anna, and Joseph. About 1902, Ike built a substantial wooden hotel at Athabasca Landing named the Grand Union Hotel, in 1904 a livery and feed stable; in 1905 a sawmill; c1906, a 3-storey boarding house; in 1911, the Athabasca Hotel; and in 1912, the Gagnon Block. He helped found the Northern Distributing Co. In the community, Ike served in the political sphere, on village council,on the Board of Trade, as a trustee for the Athabasca School District, helped to establish the town's first hospital and was active in the Catholic Church. In the fire of August 5, 1913, Ike suffered the highest single losses namely $200,000.00. In 1917, Ike abandoned Athabasca and moved to his brother's homestead in the Donatville district. Their home became a stopping place on the Athabasca - Lac La Biche trail. Clara died in 1921. In 1925 Ike married a widow, Louise Cadoux. He died in 1926.

The fonds consists of a 1905-1907 business ledger; 8 photographs including: two storey original Grand Union Hotel, 2 Gagnon houses, Isaie and Charlie Gagnon, and Dr. Boulanger; the first six chapters, epilogue and appendices of the book "One Hundred Years in the Athabasca Country, a story and a memory of the Isaie (Ike) Gagnon family"; photocopies of 1903-1911 land transactions in Athabasca Landing. In 2011 a three page article on the Isaie Gagnon family was written by grandson George Marrinier.
