Biographical history

Harold Warnica Price, 1896-1975, served with the (British) Royal Flying Corps in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Persia (Iran) during the First World War. Afterwards he obtained his medical degree in 1924 from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA before moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1929 to join the physicians at the Calgary Associate Clinic. Doctor Price became a well-known pediatrician, retiring in 1961. In 1930, he married Irene Elizabeth Gardiner,1898-1969, who had come to Calgary in 1911 with her parents Edward Parker Gardiner, 1862-1939, and Mary Jane Meters Gardiner, 1868-1970. Irene was a pianist and taught piano before working as a journalist and women's editor of The Albertan and The Calgary Herald newspapers during the 1920s prior to her marriage to Harold Warnica Price. She was president of the Calgary Branch of the Canadian Women's Press Club from 1928 to 1929. One of their daughters, Mary Elizabeth, also taught music and worked as a journalist for both newspapers prior to her marriage to Peter Burns in 1960. Their other daughters were Irene Elizabeth, Rosemary Ann, and Nancy Jennifer (Fraser).

The fonds consists of five series of correspondence, clippings, photographs and other memorabilia relating to the family, careers, personal lives and interests of Harold Warnica Price; Edward Parker Gardiner and Mary Jane Meters Gardiner and family; Irene Elizabeth Gardiner; Harold and Irene Price and their family; and Mary Elizabeth Price (Burns).
