Biographical history
George Heath MacDonald was born in Prince Edward Island in 1883. At the age of 16 he left home and became a draughtsman under the tutelage of Herbert Alton Magoon. He completed his education at McGill University in 1911, moving to Edmonton, Alberta soon after to become a partner in the architectural firm of Magoon and MacDonald. Together Magoon and MacDonald were responsible for the design of many buildings in Edmonton including Concordia College, St. Stephen's College, the Tegler Building, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) Building, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) Building, the Federal Building, and many prominent residences. During World War II, the firm designed many of the new buildings associated with the municipal airport. Mr. MacDonald passed away in 1961.
Custodial history
The records in this fonds were given to the Provincial Archives of Alberta over the course of several years. The earliest accessions (1964) were first given to the Department of Public Works by John A. MacDonald, the nephew of George Heath MacDonald. The Chief Architect of the Department of Public Works then gave the records to the Office of the Provincial Secretary, who in turn gave them to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The latest accession was first presented to Art Henderson of the Department of Public Works by George Heath MacDonald in 1954. At Mr. Henderson's request, the records were then deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1967.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of drawings made by George Heath MacDonald during research for possible reconstruction of Fort Edmonton and the flyleaf from one of MacDonald's books. The drawings were made from old photographs, maps, pictures and floor plans and originally appeared in two books by MacDonald entitled Fort Augustus Edmonton and Edmonton Fort, House and Factory.
