Biographical history

In 1960, Jacob Ghermezian, his wife Miryam, and their four sons, Eskander, Nader, Raphael and Bahman, immigrated to Canada from Iran. Jacob Ghermezian was a noted social activist for the Jewish community in Iran and continued this activism in Montreal and then Edmonton, founding Orthodox schools and synagogues worldwide, including the Edmonton Menorah Academy in 1983. The Ghermezian's conglomerate, Triple 5, was founded in 1895 by Jacob Ghermezian's father, Elijah, and operates companies involved in banking, suburban development, tourism, shopping mall development and other fields such as technology and mining. Though the Ghermezian's initially settled in Montreal, they moved to Edmonton in 1964 when Jacob expanded his business interests to include Western Canada. Though their business interests are quite diverse, the Ghermezians are best known for their vision in the construction and development of West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in the world. In recognition of their achievements and contribution to the economy of Edmonton, Alberta and Canada, as well as his contribution to the Jewish community, the Triple Five conglomerate was awarded the great Canadian Award by the Governor General of Canada. In 1992, Jacob and eachof his sons each received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation. Jacob Ghermezian passed away in 2000.
