Biographical history

William Herriot Giles, [ca. 1862]-1931, was born in London, England and came to Paisley, Ontario as a Barnardo boy. He joined the Klondike gold rush and later homesteaded at Munson, Alberta in 1912. He joined the 187th Battalion in the First World War, transferring to the 37th Company Canadian Forestry Corps for active service. He returned to Calgary in 1919. His daughter, Mabel, 1897-1995, graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 1916, trained at the Calgary Normal School, and received degrees from the University of Alberta and McMaster. She taught in Calgary for many years and was active with the Calgary Prophetic Bible Institute and First Baptist Church. She published a family history: The True Life Story of One Family / Mabel Giles. -- Calgary : Detselig, 1986.

The fonds consists of military papers and photographs of William Giles; school papers of Mabel; photographs of the Klondike; aerial views of Calgary; and photographs of the Calgary Prophetic Bible Institute.
