Biographical history

The Glenbow-Alberta Institute is a museum, art gallery, library and archives, which specializes in documenting the history of the settlement of Western Canada. The Glenbow was founded in 1954 by oilman and philanthropist Eric L. Harvie as an outgrowth of his personal interest in collecting memorabilia. In 1966 its assets were donated to the people of Alberta and the Glenbow-Alberta Institute was formed to administer the huge collections of artifacts, paintings, books and documents. Located in downtown Calgary across from the Calgary Tower, it is Western Canada's largest museum, with over 93,000 square feet of exhibition space in more than 20 galleries, showcasing a selection of the Glenbow's collection of over a million objects.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a large collection of images which portray life in the Western prairies, primarily from the 1880s to 1912. Images include native encampments, both Cree and Blackfoot; early Metis buffalo hunters and settlers; portraits of Crowfoot, Father Lacombe and John Ware; Red River carts; NWMP scouts, patrols, military, and local militia during the Riel Rebellion. Various aspects of early railroad history are depicted which include the Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Great Falls, Montana areas. There are also views of early pioneer life in the Medicine Hat region (1883), including local views, ranching life, and family portraits.
