History

The Calgary Moravian Church was founded on May 18, 1902 under the leadership of Reverend Clement Hoyler. This was the first Moravian Church in Alberta to be established in an urban area. The first pastor to serve this congregation was the Reverend Emil Suemper, a recent seminary graduate. In 1913, the congregation moved to a larger church building where it remained until 1945. Declining membership forced the congregation to sell its building and move to a smaller church, under the new name of Central Moravian Church. On March 2, 1980, the congregation opened the doors of its new Good Shepherd Moravian Church.
