Biographical history

Gough Matthews was born to Edwin and Katie (nee Gough) Matthews in Nemiskam, Alberta. Edwin (born 1886) came to Canada from Sheffield, England in March, 1900. He set up a photographic studio and traveled around the N.W.T. taking pictures of the Rockies, farms, ranches, lumber camps, and people. In 1910, Edwin homesteaded the N½ of 9-7-10. Later, while living at Warner in 1916, Edwin enlisted in the 175th Battalion and he was sent overseas. He met Katie Gough while in England and before returning to Canada in 1919 they were married. The couple returned to Edwin's old homestead upon their return that July and built a house and a barn. Edwin and Katie had six children: Kathleen, Helen, Laura, Fan, Gough, and ?. The children attended Coulee Bank School until it closed in 1939, then Nemiskam School, until it also closed. They completed their schooling at Foremost. Gough married Helen (nee McFall), and the couple lived on the family homestead with their three children. Edwin Matthews passed away in 1956.
