Biographical history

Canadian author, historian, educator, politician and Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, 1966-1974, John Walter Grant MacEwan was born on August 12, 1902 near Brandon, Manitoba. Died in Calgary, Alberta, on June 15, 2000. Biographical information available in The Canadian who's who, 1992, p. 655.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of business and personal correspondence, research material, book manuscripts (most published between 1975 and 1990), appointment diaries, photographs and speeches. Also includes articles on G. MacEwan, book reviews, material honouring G. MacEwan and other miscellaneous material. Accession 891/12.8 includes various media that relate to the personal life of G. MacEwan: 2 photograph albums of 'Pioneer Agricultural Scenes' and 'Canadian Livestock'; 3 diaries kept by G. MacEwan, 1902-1931, 1931-1950, 1958-1966; 3 scrapbooks and 3 files containing research, notes and clippings relating to various issues of interest to MacEwan; the diary of Phyllis Cline, 1932-1953.

Donated by G. MacEwan in several accessions between 1974 and 1991. Accession 770/04.20 donated by Max Foran in 2004. MsC 306, consisting of a letter from G. MacEwan to Jean Tollefson, August 24, 1977, donated by J. Tollefson in 2004. MsC 358 consisting of an audio recording (CD) of a speech given by Grant MacEwan to the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee in Cochrane, Alberta, June 1990, donated by Alex Baradoy in 2010; filed with Acc 770/04.20, Box 14. Accession 891/12.8 donated by Max Foran in 2012.
