Biographical history

George Gullion, 1833-1905, was one of three brothers from the Orkney Islands, Scotland, who was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company to build York boats at Fort Garry. He married Margareta Brazeau and they had nine children: Frank, Charlie, Johnny, Jim, William, Colin, Margaret, Maria and Elizabeth. Johnny, born in 1870, married Margaret Ann Bahan in 1888 and they had nine children: John George, Margaret Jane, Charles Smith, Frank, Simon Edward, Fred Leonard, Alice, Donald Stanley, and Florence. Johnny earned a master mariner's certificate and operated boats on the Athabasca and Peace rivers. Johnny's sister, Margaret, married Colin Johnston, 1866-1929; Maria married William McLeod, 1873-1918; and Elizabeth (Bessie), ?-1930, married William Frederick (Billy) Smith, 1866-1950.

The fonds consists of 6 photographs of Gullion family members, 2 photographs of the in-laws of the donor (Lydia Meyn and William Silkie),a family history written by Alice (Gullion) Gilliland,and clippings of obituaries from the Peace River Record. A photograph from the Athabasca Archives collection is of Napoleon Gullion and Frances Pistawka on their wedding day.
