History

"Happy" Jack Hart (alternate spelling of "Happy" Jack Hartt appears in the Cypress Hills Country Community history book, page 155) was born September 1861 in Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1893 and eventually settled in Elkwater, AB, and started a small coal mine operation. He was one of the few year-round residents of Elkwater, and was purportedly the only owner of a telephone in the area for some time. Sometime after experiencing a fire at his cabin, Happy Jack sold his coal mine to Harry Last, and instead began operation of a boat "The Lady of the Lake." Happy Jack lived for some time with Jim Ferguson at the Mitchell property. Happy Jack died May 28th 1940, and was buried in Hillside Cemetery.
