Biographical history

Irene Henderson Greenwood (Henny) served as a Canadian Nursing Sister in Italy during World War II. She joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Quebec City in 1940 and in 1942 was sent to the #1 Canadian General Hospital in England. In 1943 she was posted to Italy, to serve in the Casualty Clearing Stations throughout the Allied-held areas of the country. Mrs. Greenwood was one of the first nurses assigned to use penicillin in treating wounded soldiers. She returned to Canada at the end of the War in 1945 and has been active in the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada, Edmonton Unit.

Scope and content

The records consist of a scrapbook of memorabilia of the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada, World War II period; Royal Army Medical Corps manuals: Training Manual (1935), Notes for Troops Proceeding to North Africa (1943), Health Memoranda for British Soldiers in the Tropics (n.d.), instructions for handling penicillin (n.d.); and two copies of the military magazine, Canada's Weekly (December 1942, May 1944).
