Biographical history

Early on February 8, 1986, east of Hinton, Alberta a VIA Supercontinental travelling from Vancouver to Montreal collided with a freight train carrying grain, sulphur and sewage. Front end crews of both trains died on impact and a total of 23 people were killed. Ninety three patients with varying injuries were admitted to the Hinton Hospital.

Custodial history

Hinton Municipal Library held these records in their Archives from 1986 until the new Archives was built and then they transferred them over.

Scope and content

This collection consists of thirty-seven colored photographs taken by Rob Hoover of Northern Lights Freelance Photography of Hinton, Alberta, photographs donated by Dr. Duncan Murray, numerous newspaper and magazine articles,a DVD entitled "Disasters of the Century, The Hinton Train Crash", produced by Partners in Motion and a VHS labelled "VIA Train Wreck, Edmonton Tornado, July 1987".
