Biographical history

Hugh Aylmer Dempsey, 1929- , was born in Edgerton, Alberta and worked at the Edmonton Bulletin newspaper from 1948 to 1951 as a copy boy, reporter and provincial editor. He was a publicity writer for the Alberta Government from 1951 to 1956. From 1956 until 1991 he worked at the Glenbow in Calgary as an archivist, 1956-1967, and curator/director, 1967-1991. He received the Order of Canada in 1975. On his retirement he was made Chief Curator Emeritus. He published many books and articles about native peoples and Alberta history, and collected photos relating to southern Alberta reserves. He also taught native studies and Alberta history at the University of Calgary and was involved in studies of Fort Calgary and the Cochrane Ranche. In 1953 he married Pauline Gladstone, 1929- , and they had five children, James, Louise, John, Leah and Lois. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary. His memoirs were published as Always an Adventure : An Autobigraphy / Hugh A. Dempsey. -- Calgary : University of Calgary Press, 2011. Also consists of recordings of native history lectures (1968); articles about Leavings, Doesn't Sit Down Shield, Peigan Post, and Calgary's establishment; research notes, maps and photographs related to the Fort Calgary project (1968-1975); research notes and correspondence about the Cochrane Ranche project (1969-1972); recording of a U. of C. convocation address about natives in today's society (1974); conference paper about local histories (1970); program for the unveiling of the Senator James Gladstone bust in Ottawa (2001); and photographs of native peoples, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek and Calgary (1880s-1925).
