Austin Simonds fonds

The fonds consists of photographs, taken by Austin Simonds in 1938, of northern B.C. and southern Yukon. Images include Hazel and Jack Pringle, log cabins and a garden at Dalton Post, a deteriorating log cabin near Pleasant Camp on the Dalton Trail, a section of the trail between Glacier Camp and Bear Camp, a fish weir on the Tatshenshini River, fish drying on a rack at Dalton Post, a mining claim at Squaw Creek on the Yukon-British Columbia border, and views from Tatshenshini to Squaw Creek showing mountains and valley, Parton Glacier, Klahini [Klutlan?] Glacier near Rainy Hollow Pass, a mountain pass to Klukshu, and King Salmon Creek. The photographs have captions written on the back.

The fonds consists of photographs of the Canadian Army barracks in Whitehorse, Winter Carnival activities, a White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) sleigh, the Old Log Church and an old copper mine outside of Whitehorse. The remaining images include the airport control towers at Teslin Lake and Watson Lake, the Alaska Highway, the First Nations community of Champagne, the sternwheeler Casca, Teslin Lake bridge, and Mr. Evans.

The collection consists of a letter and diary. The letter was written by W.P. Cellbish [?] to his father December 1897 from Lake Lindeman describing his experiences in getting to and hiking the Chilkoot Trail. The diary, written by an unidentified individual, documents a trip from Dawson City, Alaska to Whitehorse, to Skagway by train, and Dyea to Bennett Lake via the Chilkoot Trail.

The collection consists of six black and white studio portraits of the first City Council of Whitehorse, Mayor Gordon Armstrong, City Clerk Percy Hewitt, Alderman Bill Hamilton, Jimmy Harrington, Sammy McClinton and George Ryder. These six photos were acquired as a unit since they were mounted together in a frame. Also included is a collection of five black and white photographs of North West Mounted Police (NWMP).
