Louis Tarlton fonds

The fonds consists of copies of a handwritten letter and a typed transcript of the letter. The letter was written by Louis Tarlton to his brother Bob on October 20, 1898 from Victoria, B.C. as he was returning home to Montreal from the Yukon. Tarlton describes his perilous journey to the Klondike, working on a steamboat on the Yukon River, and his impressions of Dawson City. In addition, there is a four page biographical history of the Tarlton family, photocopies of three photographs, and contextual information about the donation from Eileen Jeck.

The fonds consists of copies of handwritten letters Lyle Lyman wrote to his mother as he travelled to the Yukon from Chicago during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. The letters describe in detail his trip north, climbing the Chilkoot Pass, building a scow and travelling down the Yukon River to Dawson City, and his activities while there.

The fonds primarily consists of material relating to MacBride Museum: minutes of board meetings, financial reports, Annual General Meeting (AGM) and President reports, 3 scrapbooks containing news clippings and photographs about the Yukon, MacBride Museum and First Nations people, correspondence including an informative letter from Hugh Bostock regarding the use of lamp black on Lake Laberge in the spring, newsletters, news clippings about the official opening of MacBride Museum and the death of Bill MacBride, a Certificate of Achievement awarded to MacBride Museum, signatures of visiting royalty and dignitaries, museum visitor books, and promotional material. The fonds also includes a Certificate of Incorporation for the Yukon Historical Society, a ledger containing minutes of meetings, a meeting agenda and a sketch for the proposed Centennial Museum, which became MacBride Museum.

The collection consists of audio tape cassettes containing storytelling, oral histories, presentations, and other programs and events at the MacBride Museum and in greater Whitehorse. Includes First Nations creation stories told by Louise Profeit-LeBlanc and Ruth Carrol, drum songs by Kolvane Fox, and a narrative of Laurent Cyr's life in the Yukon presented at the 1991 Sourdough Rendezvous. The oral history interviews conducted by Museum staff and other individuals cover topics including biographical information of the persons interviewed, travel, transportation, geography, activities, and people in the Yukon. Interviews include: Roy Minter's visit with MacBride Museum Director Joanne Meehan in 1990 regarding the outdoor artifacts, his arrival in Whitehorse in 1955, involvement with the Museum, and friend William D. MacBride; an interview of Bonnie Piper by Marjorie Almstrom in 1991 on her life and travels in the Yukon beginning 1946; interview of Pat Olsen by Doreen Wahl in 1991 relating to the Whitehorse stamp club; and Neil McLeod interview relating to his work on the sternwheelers 1935-1941 and his photographs of the Yukon. The collection contains other miscellaneous sound recordings: Kitty Smith talking about her carvings, a presentation on Mount Logan by geologist Charlie Roots, the Alcan Highway and Soldier's Summit official openings, Robert Service reading his poetry, Pierre Burton on the Klondike Gold Rush, and various Museum talks and tours. Some of the audio tape cassettes were copied in the 1990s.

The photographs (1898-1949) include portraits of Salamon and Hanna, their children Hilma, Lillian, Edward and Mamie, and Salamon's discovery claim on Bear Creek.

Others may have been taken by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
