Cy and Mary Hampson fonds

The fonds consists of research material (including field journals and dissertation material), copies of publications, original manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks of wildlife-related clippings, scrapbooks of Outdoors Unlimited articles, pamphlets for Question Mark Trail, and files of the Hampson owned Cymar Films.

The majority of the photographs and negatives depict flora and fauna from around Alberta and northern Canada, with particular emphasis on birds and Arctic animals. The photos are skillfully composed by Cy Hampson and were developed by Mary Hampson. Many of the images were used by Cy Hampson in his research and teaching.

The films were created by Cy Hampson during the course of his doctoral research and depict flying squirrels and motion studies of other animals such as dogs and horses.

The fonds also consists of poetry journals, an extensive collection of programs from Edmonton and area theatrical productions, unpublished play scripts, and a scrapbook of Alberta drama and dance material created or collected by Mary Hampson.

The fonds also consists of films that were created under the Cymar Films label. There are other films that were co-produced with Mary Hampson and focus on a number of topics related to nature and wildlife. The films are all release prints or answer prints, with the exception of a few reels of work prints that have no corresponding release/answer prints. There are also production files related to these productions including licensing agreements, correspondence, project files, and broadcast agreements.

This material consists of textual and audiovisual records created over the course of Radford’s career, including material created under the Filmwest Associates, Great North Productions, Great Plains Productions, White Pine Pictures, and Clearwater Documentary labels.

    The material includes records related to completed projects such as Inuit Odyssey, Tar Sands, A Scattering of Seeds, The Power of Dreams, The End of Evolution, Ernest Brown: Pioneer Photographer (including audio reels of interviews with early Edmonton photographer Gladys Reeves), Hockey Night in Harlem, Ma Vlast, The Honour of the Crown, Arctic Dreamer, Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies, The Great Divide, Road of Bones, Alberta Bound, Codebreakers, Roughing It: A Golfer’s Guide to the Universe, and Tipping Point.  These records include job files, production stills, scripts, camera tapes, and some masters.  There are also numerous records related to incomplete projects, unsolicited script submissions, and administrative records from Great North Communications, Clearwater Documentary, and Great Plains Productions.

Syncrude film collection

The collection consists of two films, Bridge to the Future and The Sand Barrier, about the Alberta oil industry that were commissioned by Syncrude.

Dalhousie Oil, Ltd. Collection

The collection consists of seven photographs. Five of the seven photographs in the record appear to show evidence of a fire that took place at a Dalhousie Oil refinery in Okotoks, Alberta. One image depicts a smoldering refinery, while four others depict vehicles damaged in the incident. Two of the seven photographs are of unknown provenance, and each feature a matching decorative border. One of these photographs depicts a street scene from the 1920’s, and the other eight airplanes lined up in a row.

Festival '88 fonds

The fonds includes records detailing the planning and organization of Festival ’88. Documents include board meeting minutes; contracts for services and sponsorships; contracts for performers and artists; detailed financial information including budgets and financial reports; records describing fundraising strategies; formal grant applications; executive correspondence; ballots and correspondence about the First Ukrainian Contemporary Music Awards; and press releases in both English and Ukrainian.

    The fonds also includes promotional materials such as posters, pamphlets, programs, and brochures; news clippings about the festival; and correspondence received in the aftermath of the festival. 30 photographs depict members of the Board of Directors at work as well as events over the course of the festival.

Festival '88

The collection consists of two films: A New Rose in Alberta (1961), produced by the Canadian Oil Companies Ltd., is an industrial film about White Rose gasoline. An Invitation to the Future (1966), produced by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), is a promotional film about SAIT and its programs.

Fires of Spring film reel

These records consist of a copy of Fires of Spring on 16mm film and a DVD copy of the same title. Fires of Spring is a 1978 documentary produced by the University of Alberta about the use of controlled fires for agricultural management. The film specifically focuses on the use of controlled fires by First Nations people in northern Alberta and features interviews with members of the Cree, Beaver, Dene, and Chipewyan nations regarding the traditional use of fire in land management. The film also features several University of Alberta faculty members discussing the importance of the practice.

Peter McKenna collection

The collection consists of four photographs, three of which are team portraits of Coal Branch sports teams, including a portrait of the championship 1932 Cadomin Miners baseball squad (including McKenna), a collage of the 1935-36 Luscar Hockey Club, and a collage of the 1932-33 Cadomin Indians hockey squad. The fourth photo is a portrait of McKenna, “Mr. McMillond,” and an unidentified third man.

Interesting People of Victoria: Hulda Brown interview discrete item

The disc features a 1962 interview with Hulda Brown (née Bansemer) regarding her experiences in the Frank Slide of 1903. The interview was broadcast as part of a series entitled “Interesting People of Victoria” on Radio CJVI on January 20, 1962, based out of British Columbia.
