City of Grande Prairie Historical Photograph collection

Collection of photographs removed from a display, possibly created for the 25th anniversary of the City of Grande Prairie in 1983. The photographs were arranged mostly in date order, from the first business on the future site of Grande Prairie ca. 1907 to members of the Old Timers Association in 1963. The photographs were numbered in order of how they were arranged in the display, and that original order has been retained, along with the item descriptions which accompanied the photographs. Subjects include buildings, people and events associated with the history of Grande Prairie.

The fonds consists of 65 photographs relating to the history of the Rorem, Fimrite and Ronning families, Valhalla Center, Valhalla Luthern Church, and Valhalla School and newspaper articles relating to the same. Also included is a copy of Lyman's Teaching Cetificate, 1911 and a copy of 1915 Rules for Teachers.

Robert Millar fonds

The fonds consists of photographs of Robert Millar as mayor, and on various hunting and camping expeditions as well as photographs of Chrysler dealerships in the Peace country; newspapers containing articles relating to his tenure as mayor; copies of speeches; programs from event; financial statements; yearly report booklets; and correspondence all relating to his tenure as councilor and mayor. Also included is a 1923 calendar.

Larson's Garage fonds

The fonds consists of 16 counter sales booklets and one book of cheque stubs, detailing the types of work, sales and expenses at Larson’s Garage in 1953 and 1954. Each counter slip contains the date, the name of the customer, the details of work done, and the price charged. Customers were mainly farmers in the neighbourhood, but also included companies such as United Geographic Drilling, the Northern Alberta Railway, and Spirit River School Division.

William J. Noll fonds

The fonds consists of a journal kept by William J. Noll from about 1914 to 1925. It records events in his life including homesteading in the Peace River Country, enlisting in the RNWMP and WWI, working in various industries including Oregon's lumber camps, and becoming an early commercial pilot in Oregon. The journal includes written entries, photographs, posters, some employment records, receipts, tickets, cards, and newspaper clippings. Several other loose records are inserted into the pages of the journal, including a WWI medal, Great War Veterans Association membership booklet, 1935 US naturalization papers, correspondence about his homestead and petroleum and natural gas leases, [ca. 1952] USAF course application, and 1917 Canadian naturalization papers. Two pages of genealogical notes presumed to have been written by Clem Kinderwater are also inserted.

The journal ends rather abruptly in January 1925 as William is on his way from El Paso to Portland. The final entry states "Contd in next book." Subsequent book(s) have unfortunately been lost.

The original order of the journal has been maintained, including the original position of inserted material.

R.J. Campbell fonds

The fonds consists of 15 photographs, an Employment Agreement between the Hudson's Bay Company and R J Campbell, and a magazine clipping photo of R J Campbell. The photographs are of the Hudson's Bay Company Store in Grande Prairie when it opened in 1948, the original staff group in 1948, 4 photos of the crowds on opening day, 2 photos of a children's fashion show on opening day, and 5 photographs of the HBC Company float for the opening of the Smoky River bridge.

The fonds consists of two accounts books from the Big Seven Co. Ltd., an original copy of the sale agreement for the threshing machine, and an inspection certificate of the company's boiler. The fonds deals with the threshing business conducted by the Big Seven Co. Ltd. and includes expenses, wages for employees, charges for groceries at the company store, etc.

The fonds consists of 70 photographs taken by McDermid Studio on the Canadian Pacific Railway tour of the Peace Country in 1928. Subjects of the photographs include the Beaverlodge Experimental Station; the Trelle farm at Wembley; the Jack Thompson harvest east of Grande Prairie; the ranching operation of Mr. Early on the banks of the Peace River; roads, towns, and rural scenes en route; roads and buildings in Grande Prairie; and group photographs of the tour members. There is also a photograph of young Marion Pratt pinning a "Just Kids Safety" button on Lord Lovat, who was a member of the CPR delegation.

Gaston Mencke fonds

The fonds consists of Gaston Mencke's memoirs of the McCrae Lumber Co. at Faust, Alberta in the winter of 1947-48, and the Park Bros. Lumber Camp from 1949-1955; 43 photographs of the two camps; and 12 photographs showing modern equipment working at the Weyerhauser Mill south of Grande Prairie in February 1998.
