Papers document in particular McDonald's work on behalf of the University of Alberta, 1957-1996, the Liberal Association of Alberta, 1959-1973, his judicial career, 1973-1996, and his chairmanship of the Royal Commission on Certain Activities of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, 1977-1981. The fonds is divided into eight series and thirty-two sub series. The following series of records are included:;
