Topics covered in the collection include agriculture, oil development, national energy policies, and the Heritage Savings Trust Fund, as well as scenes of Alberta people, towns and cities, rural areas and industry.

The fonds consists of correspondence, newspaper articles, election materials, day planners, photographs, negatives, video cassettes, and other materials relating to Jack Shields political career and private life. The majority of the materials relate to his time in the House of Commons (1980-1993).

Fonds consists of biographical materials, land survey records, provincial election papers, appointment to the Senate records, family and professional correspondence, maps and photographs. Three original photos were returned to the donor; a copy negative of each of these photographs was produced for use by the Provincial Archives of Alberta before the return of the photos to the donor.
