Joseph A. MacKenzie Files

Series consists of the legal and personal files of Joseph A. MacKenzie, including client files for the Town of Wainwright, which Joseph MacKenzie served as town solicitor, and the Wainwright Municipal Hospital, as well as several estates files. Also includes personal correspondence and financial information of Joseph MacKenzie. MacKenzie was primarily a sole practitioner in Wainwright from 1922 to 1958 when his son John H. MacKenzie joined him in partnership. Joseph MacKenzie was also the local agent for the Alberta Attorney General and served as a part-time crown prosecutor. Series files were kept by John H. MacKenzie as a sample of significant files for his father’s practice. Joseph MacKenzie died in 1959.

Prosecutorial Files

Series consists of transcripts and appeal books for several important murder and other criminal cases prosecuted by John MacKenzie as local crown prosecutor in Red Deer. MacKenzie was the first full-time prosecutor and agent of the Attorney General in the city.

Publications

Series consists of publications. It contains two files: magazine and newspaper clippings, and magazine issues. Magazine issues are arranged chronologically. Magazine and newspaper clippings are arranged as chronologically as much as possible, as some pages contain copies of articles from different years.

McKillop Accident Litigation

Series consists of files for McKillop’s lawsuit in Montana arising from a motor vehicle accident in 1982 that left him seriously injured and permanently disabled. McKillop joined the bar of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana to represent himself in the lawsuit but later also engaged Montana counsel. The defendants were Blackfeet Indians. The accident took place on a state highway within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in northwestern Montana, raising jurisdictional issues, and was eventually carried forward in United States District Court. The case was settled in McKillop’s favour in 1984. The series includes court documents filed at different levels of court in Montana, depositions, medical reports, economic reports on McKillop’s loss of income, correspondence with Montana counsel and insurers involved in the litigation and settlement, and research files on American tort and aboriginal law.

McKillop Accident Photos

Series consists of photos of the 1982 McKillop accident site in Montana and later Polaroid photos of McKillop’s injuries and the accident site. Accident scene photos were taken shortly after the accident, likely by accident investigators with the police, and were entered as exhibits in McKillop’s litigation. McKillop also returned to the accident scene and took his own Polaroid photos as well as two of his healing injuries. The series also includes two snapshots of McKillop relaxing in his van prior to the accident.

Miscellaneous personal papers

Series consists of miscellaneous personal papers belonging to and about Judge Sissons that do not fit in other series. Series contains four files: speeches and radio talks; Judge Sissons' death and commemoration; miscellaneous papers; and Queen's University 1917 yearbook.

Keegstra Trial

Series consists of MacKenzie’s note books, trial transcripts, draft jury addresses and photocopies of evidence from the trial of James Keegstra, the Eckville, Alberta teacher and Holocaust denier. MacKenzie and a jury tried and convicted Keegstra under the hate speech provisions of the Criminal Code in 1985.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of 19 scrapbooks of different sizes and colours. Scrapbooks contain magazine and newspaper clippings, publications, correspondence, text of speeches and radio talks, banquet programs, certificates, invitations, miscellaneous textual documents, and photographs. Magazine and newspaper clippings are about Judge Sissons, his cases, and northern affairs. Most of the material is in English, but a few newspaper clippings are in French. Photographs are of Judge Sissons and things relating to him, court, the north, politicians, and other miscellaneous images.

Judicial Note Books

Series consists of judicial note books of Justice John H. MacKenzie of Court of Queen’s Bench. MacKenzie’s note books include his earlier tenures as a magistrate and then provincial court judge in Red Deer before his elevation to Queen’s Bench in 1983. The note books generally contain MacKenzie’s notes taken in the courtroom during trials, but also include draft judgments and notes on different areas of case law. Series also includes several note books from MacKenzie’s tenure as a magistrate and provincial court judge featuring essays on judicial independence and general notes on case law.

Series consists of 92 photographs and 2 drawings. Photographs are grouped into Life magazine photographs, Queen's University, Sissons family photographs, photographs of judges, portraits of Judge Sissons, photographs on circuit court, miscellaneous photographs, photograph of Judge Sissons' funeral, miscellaneous portraits, slides, and negatives. Drawings are of Kikkik and of her struggle with Ootuk.
