Rivertop Students on Horseback
Many of Jim Courtney's Rivertop students came to school on horseback as there were no buses in those days. Jim (teacher) remembers, "The Rehm boys had an interesting mode of travel. It reminds me of a long hog trough. It never left the yard that it wasn't full of kids. I went home with them once but after about 100 yards and several spills decided to walk."

The bridge over the Smoky River was built in 1949-1950 and was a major advancement to transportation to the south. Before the bridge, a ferry was used in the summer and an ice bridge in the winter but there were seasons in between when neither could be used. This shows the bridge as viewed from the ferry approach.
The bridge over the Smoky River, built in 1949-1950, is viewed from the ferry approach beneath. A truck is being prepared for the parade and people are standing on the bridge watching.
The parade includes decorated trucks as floats, some in a line beside the bridge and some proceeding over the bridge, including a team of horses. A crowd of people line the banks. One truck is reported to be carrying the first spinning wheel brought into the area.

People along with a truck float used in the parade board the ferry for a last ferry ride across the Smoky River. The ferry is seen under the newly constructed bridge.
