Fonds consists of: numerous subject and biography files containing transcripts, articles and historical documents on numerous individuals, institutions, industries, and events relevant to southeast Alberta and Southwest Saskatchewan; correspondence and other administrative records related to his participation with author Ed Gould in the writing of “All Hell for a Basement”; notebooks related to thoughts, interviews, and observances on various subjects; various brochures and small publications on this region; notes etc. of speeches and talks; personal papers related to Mr. Barrie’s artistic endeavours as well as his time working for Eaton’s; notebooks and other documents regarding his involvement with the Medicine Hat Art Club; administrative records regarding the Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery of which he served as curator; area maps of the region, dating from the 1880s to the 1980s; and approximately 500 photographs taken by, or gathered by Mr. Barrie in the conducting of numerous research projects, including scrapbooks and a photo album created by Charles Anderson (previously Charles Kraus) highlighting Medicine Hat’s contributions during the First World War.

The fonds consists of records of the Spirit River Settlement Historical Society including executive records and records of their History Book Committee which consist of planning documents, financial records, minutes and correspondence, and original and/or edited copies of submissions to the Spirit River history book Chepi Sepe. The first sections of the Book Committee records include a history of the general region and the Spirit River Settlement area, the coming of settlers and the growth of agriculture, businesses, industries, municipal governments, the history of veterans of WWI and WWII, schools, churches, medical facilities, and cultural and recreational groups. The second main body of the records contains original and/or edited copies of over 630 family histories arranged in alphabetical order by surname.

The photographs are a wide assortment of subjects from the Peace Celebration in Grande Prairie in 1919, to Jennie on her travels in 1986.
