Industry photograph collection

The collection consists of photographs that were part of unidentified collections and were organized under the title "Industry" for research and exhibit purposes. Photograph subjects include mining, boat building, agriculture, trapping and trading, fishing, and construction of the Alaska Highway. Many are images of mining in the Klondike Gold Fields: busy hand mining scenes with open cut mines, sluice boxes and flumes on Bonanza, Gold Hill, Sulpher Creek, Dominion Creek and Quartz Creek, rocking on Gold Hill and King Solomon?s Hill, hydraulicing on French Hill and Lovette Gulch, and underground mining on Eldorado #16. Klondike scenes also include dredges in Bonanza Basin, Canadian No. 1 at Bear Creek 1902, Dredge #3, a small dredge on Hyatt Creek, construction of a dredge, and a view of Canadian Klondike Mining Co. headquarters, in 1906 during the construction of the Klondike Syphon. There are a number of images of the open pit at Pueblo Mines, mining in the Atlin area with water wheels and placer mining in Alaska. Boat building includes a sternwheeler under construction at the Whitehorse shipyard, whipsawing boat lumber and boat building at Bennett. The agriculture photographs include a vegetable garden, a Northern Commercial Company (NCCo.) truck filled with cabbages, Acklen?s garden in Dawson City, the first load of hay harvested at Fairbanks, and images of apples, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes and a 10 foot high tomato plant in Dawson City. Other industry photographs in this collection include a trapper?s outfit in 1911, native men trading at Dawson City, a sled full of caribou in Fairbanks, a mule train alongside the Klondike River, the Northern Lumber Co. in the Klondike Valley, a portable sawmill used by engineers on the Alaska Highway, original bridge near Slims River during building of Alaska Highway, fish wheel on the Yukon River and interiors of Zaccarelli?s Bookstore and the Monte Carlo. Identified photographers are Larss and Duclos, Cantwell, Adams and Larkin, Darms, E.O. Ellingsen and E.A. Hegg.

Collection consists of photographs of the poet, Robert W. Service. The images include Service at his cabin in Dawson City 1910, at work as a bank teller in Whitehorse and standing next to a Yukon Northern Air Transport Ltd. airplane in 1942. There are studio photographs and promotional photographs of Service in Hollywood with Marlene Deitrich (possibly during the filming of the movie "The Spoilers" in 1942), and with his wife in Nice and Monte Carlo in 1934, and in New York 1948.

James Keery fonds

The fonds consists of photographs of Forty Mile, Dawson City, Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP) group shots, placer mining, log buildings in the Klondike, dog sleds, logging on the west coast, totem poles, and James Keery and his wife. The fonds also includes three notebooks which belonged to James Keery. Two contain names of people to whom he lent grubstake money and the amounts that they owed him. The third notebook, mostly unfilled pages, contains lyrics to a version of 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' and a notation with dates of his trip along the Chilkoot Trail.

The fonds consists of photographs and textual records. The photographs include images of Jan Montgomery in uniform, the Whitehorse Inn, and scenes of early Whitehorse, Dawson City and Canyon City, Yukon. Textual records include her Canadian passport, a continuous discharge certificate from the Department of Transport, a copy of "Northern Tragedy", a beer label from O'Brien Brewing & Malting Co., a stock certificate from Whitehorse Hotels Ltd. and five letters of reference.

The fonds consists of 7 photographs of Father Bobillier, "Father Bob", at the manse in Dawson City and on his boat on the Yukon River. In one photograph he is travelling with Frank Slim. The colour photographs depict Father Tanguay at his church in Carmacks and buildings in downtown Whitehorse.

Jewel Butler O'Hanlon fonds

The fonds consists of photographs of Jewel Butler O'Hanlon, a former stewardess for Canadian Pacific Airlines (CP Air), returning to various airports in northern British Columbia and southern Yukon. There are images of Mrs. O'Hanlon with Diane Chisholm, Fort St. John mayor Pat Walsh, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other local dignitaries at the airports in Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Watson Lake, Yukon and Edmonton. Included are a number of photographs of Jewel Butler serving food on airplanes in 1941.

The fonds consist of 16 older 8" x 10" glossy copy photographs, acquired from other institutions, but there isn't any reference stamps evident. Of the two colour prints, one is a colour photograph, the other is a laser generated print. The subject matter of the photographs cover RCMP and NWMP activities in the Yukon such as the journey of the St Roch the RCMP boat that travelled through the Northwest Passage, dogsleds and teams at Dawson, and early Whitehorse, and a group portrait of RCMP G Division in 1972. There are photos of Jim Shook and Cpl. Sam Baird. The other photographs are of the "Great March West" of the NWMP from Manitoba to Alberta in 1873, and views of Ft Calgary, Ft. Whoop-Up, and Ft. Walsh. Identified people in these photographs are Sitting Bull, Crowfoot, Jeremy Potts, and James F. Macleod.

Joe Boyle Repatriation Committee collection

The collection includes a 15 page paper delivered to the Oxford Historical Society in 1973 entitled "Klondike Joe Boyle" by Len Taylor, a public notice of the illustrated talk and an admission ticket to this talk; a list of members of Boyle's Yukon Machine Gun Detachment 1914; copies of newspaper clippings; a letter from the Oxford Historical Society, Joe Boyle Repatriation Committee; and a page of letterhead of the Yukon Historical Society with signatures of Flora Boyle Frisch, Edwin Bennett and Len Taylor. The photographs in the collection include two similar black and white portraits of Joseph Boyle in uniform, circa 1920, two black and white postcards, a copy print of members of Boyle's Yukon Machine Gun Detachment. The three colour photographs, taken in 1973, depict the grave of Col. Joe Boyle in the churchyard of Church of St. James, Hampton Hill, England.
